henjokaku
Commentary
This is the Henjokaku. It is a training facility, which was built in 1984 as a part of the project to mark the 1150th anniversary of the death of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Enshrined in the first floor entrance area is a seated statue of Shakyamuni Tathagata (the Incarnation of Truth) and standing statues of the ten great disciples of Buddha made by Shinya Nakamura. Behind these statues is the “Stepping Manda for Sand from the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage to 88 Sacred Places.” On the second floor, a statue of Kobo Daishi (Kukai) is enshrined in a 160-tatami mat lecture hall that is used for lectures and other purposes.
