Commentary

This is a Saigoku 33 Avalokitesvara Sanctuary (copy of sacred site). It is said that Saigoku 33 Avalokitesvara Sanctuary was established circa the 12th Century, the end of Heian period, mainly including ancient and old temples scattered around Kinki region. In the Edo period, the Saigoku 33 Avalokitesvara Sanctuary formed the Japan 100 Kannon (Avalokitesvara) Pilgrimage with the Chichibu 34 Avalokitesvara Sanctuary and Bando 33 Avalokitesvara Sanctuary, and became popular as a place for a circuit of holy temples for common people. These copies of sacred sites were built all over Japan, and this was built as a part of the 1200th anniversary projects of the foundation of Zentsu-ji Temple in 2006.
