Commentary

This is the Central Gate; it is a registered tangible cultural property. It is situated on the path from the Garan Complex to the Tanjo-in Birthplace Complex. In the east side of the gate hangs a tablet with Zentsu-ji written on it in calligraphy by the great priest Gōchō from the Higo province (now Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu). Looking at the detailed designs and other features of this central gate, it is estimated to have been built during the end of the Edo period.
