Commentary

This is the Shakado Hall of Buddha; it is a registered tangible cultural property. The current building was erected in the Empo era of the Edo period, and it was originally constructed in the Tanjo-in Birthplace Complex as a hall to house the image of the temple’s founder (Mieido). Later in 1831, it was relocated to the current place and became Shakado, upon the construction of the new Mieido building. The Shakado is where the founders of Buddhism, Shakyamuni Tathagata (the Incarnation of Truth) and the Ten Great Disciples (of Shakyamuni), are enshrined. The Honzon is a wooden seated statue of Shakyamuni Tathagata, which was made in the Edo period.
